ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates-Sierra Leone’s Chairman of the Presidential Initiative on Climate Change, Renewable Energy and Food Security, Hon. Alhaji Dr Kandeh Kolleh Yumkella, has moderated presentations by shortlisted candidates seeking to become the next Director-General of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA).
During the session, the candidates presented their plans to members of the IRENA Council and replied to questions. The process is part of the selection of a successor to outgoing Director-General Francesco La Camera, whose replacement is expected to lead the agency for a four-year term.
The Council is expected to follow the presentations and discussions with recommendations to the IRENA Assembly. The Assembly will make the final decision on the appointment in January 2027.
IRENA’s selection of Dr Yumkella to moderate the session highlights his stature in the international energy community and his experience in energy and sustainable development. His appointment also underscores Sierra Leone’s involvement in global energy transition discussions.
The appointment of Dr Yumkella comes as President Julius Maada Bio’s administration continues to work to improve access to affordable energy in Sierra Leone. The country also seeks to support international efforts to expand renewable energy and a more inclusive transition to sustainable energy systems.
More than 300 energy stakeholders, including government representatives and country delegates from around the world, are attending the ongoing 32nd Meeting of the IRENA Council. People are reviewing agency work and discussing priorities.
IRENA is based in Abu Dhabi and promotes international cooperation and partnerships to boost the use of renewable energy. Its work also advances efforts to tackle climate change, increase access to energy and energy security, and foster sustainable development and resilient economies and societies.
The agency has 172 member countries and 12 other countries currently undergoing accession to the European Union.
Dr Yumkella was joined at the session by Sierra Leone’s Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates and Permanent Representative to IRENA, Rashid Sesay.
