During the 114th International Labour Conference (ILC), Sierra Leone’s Minister of Employment, Labour, and Social Security, Honourable Mohamed Rahman Swaray, led a delegation to a bilateral meeting with the Director-General of the International Labour Organisation. The Minister began by thanking Sierra Leone for inviting her to the Conference and congratulating the ILO leadership and delegates on two significant outcomes: the adoption of the Convention on Decent Work in the Platform Economy and the Transformative Agenda for Gender Equality at Work Instrument.
Hon. Swaray updated the Director-General on recent domestic progress, including the successful Second National Labour Conference and Social Dialogue Forum in Freetown. That event, he explained, brought together employers, workers, government representatives, and other stakeholders to strengthen social dialogue and improve labour relations across the country. He also used the opportunity to discuss the Ministry’s progress in ratifying ILO conventions, reviewing national labour laws, promoting decent work policies, and strengthening tripartism as the foundation for fair, inclusive workplaces.
The Minister expressed Sierra Leone’s desire to strengthen its partnership with the ILO while wishing the Director-General success in his re-election campaign. The delegation formally requested technical and financial assistance to conduct a comprehensive Labour Force Survey, a critical tool for policymaking and labour market planning, as well as ILO support to institutionalise the National Social Dialogue Forum as a sustainable, regular platform for engagement among social partners.
Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to advancing decent work, inclusive economic growth, and social justice in Sierra Leone. The meeting ended with a shared commitment to translating international standards and conference outcomes into practical national actions that benefit workers, employers, and communities.
