Bridging Cultural Gaps: Authentic African Stories for Children
“Bundu and the Dundun” is the latest addition to Remoe’s acclaimed series of children’s books, specifically designed to address the scarcity of culturally relevant educational materials for African children. The inspiration for the book arose from a transformative personal experience in November 2019 during a road trip for the reboot of “The Vickie Remoe Show.” While exploring Moyamba, the author witnessed a mesmerizing traditional dance performance by young boys, which challenged her previous fears of masquerades and ignited a desire to celebrate this vibrant aspect of Sierra Leonean heritage.
“For much of my life, growing up in the city, masks and masquerades were associated with fear due to colonial influences that labeled our traditional practices as ‘devilish’,” explains Remoe. “Witnessing the natural grace and agility of those young dancers in Moyamba was truly transformative. It inspired me to write a story that introduces children to this beautiful culture in a positive and engaging way.
Phonics & Heritage: Empowering Young African Readers
Remoe’s motivation to create culturally resonant phonics books emerged from her own experience as a mother. “When preparing my son for preschool, I found that available books, mostly from the US, didn’t resonate with his reality,” she shares. “I wanted to create books that not only teach fundamental literacy skills but also showcase and highlight African, specifically Sierra Leonean, culture.”
“Bundu and the Dundun” follows “Adama Loves Akara” (2021) and “Print for Ami” (2022) in Remoe’s growing series. Each book serves as a “conversation starter,” offering parents and educators a valuable opportunity to discuss cultural elements such as traditional attire, drums, and scenes from Sierra Leone.
Vibrant Illustrations: A Visual Journey to Sierra Leone
To bring “Bundu and the Dundun” to life, Remoe collaborated with talented British Sierra Leonean illustrator Eugene Kaitell. His vibrant and rich illustrations, meticulously guided by Remoe’s TV show footage and photographs from her travels, transport readers directly to the authentic landscapes and cultural scenes of Sierra Leone.

Remoe recently had the joy of reading the book to children in Freetown, accompanied by Joe Lappia from the Sierra Leone National Dance Troupe, who played the authentic sounds from the book, encouraging the children to dance and engage playfully with the story.

As a dedicated working mom and entrepreneur, Vickie Remoe remains steadfast in her mission to enrich children’s literature. “I’ll continue this journey until I’ve covered all five vowels,” she states, with book four, focusing on the ‘oh’ sound, already in the illustration phase. “The most rewarding part of this process is hearing from parents whose children connect with the stories and develop a deeper appreciation for their heritage.”
