Alpha Sesay Esq., Attorney General and Minister of Justice, met with the Chairman of the Electoral Commission of Sierra Leone (ECSL), Mr Edmond Sylvester Alpha, and fellow commissioners in what both sides described as a constructive, forward-looking discussion about the future of the country’s electoral governance.
The high-level meeting discussed the government’s ongoing electoral reform agenda, with a focus on proposed constitutional amendments, institutional reforms within the Electoral Commission, and a comprehensive review of key electoral laws. According to officials, the initiative aims to strengthen democratic institutions, improve electoral preparedness, and increase public confidence in the electoral system.
Participants looked at practical ways to improve election management, increase transparency and accountability, and ensure that future elections meet accepted national and international standards for credibility and inclusiveness. The discussion focused on operational improvements to voter registration and logistics, dispute resolution mechanisms, information dissemination, and steps to improve voting process integrity.
Attorney General Sesay reaffirmed the government’s commitment to pursuing reforms through broad stakeholder engagement and inclusive consultation, emphasising that any changes must reflect Sierra Leoneans’ aspirations and reinforce the country’s democratic foundations. The Attorney General emphasised the importance of interinstitutional cooperation in transforming agreed-upon reforms into effective policy and practice.
Following the meeting, ECSL Chairman Edmond Sylvester Alpha praised the reform process and stressed the importance of collaboration between the Commission and other state institutions. “Electoral reform is critical to strengthening our democracy and ensuring that our electoral systems continue to inspire public trust and confidence,” Mr Alpha stated. “The Electoral Commission continues to work closely with all relevant institutions to create a legal and operational framework that promotes transparency, inclusivity, accountability, and credible elections for all Sierra Leoneans.”
Both the Attorney General’s office and the ECSL expressed confidence that the proposed measures will consolidate recent democratic gains, improve electoral administration, and contribute to peaceful, transparent, and credible elections in the future. As the reform process continues, more consultations with political parties, civil society, and other stakeholders are expected.
