The Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Dr. Henry Musa Kpaka, led a high-profile delegation on June 24, 2025, to assess the progress of the Senehun Modern Bridge and the restoration of the vital 162.5-kilometer road that links Sierra Leone’s major economic hubs. This inspection was not only to assess infrastructure improvements but also to engage with stakeholders involved in the ambitious 8,700-hectare Mattru oil palm project, which is projected to generate over 1,000 jobs for local youth and women.
During the visit, Minister Kpaka announced that President Julius Maada Bio is set to officially commission the bridge soon, a move that is anticipated to significantly enhance transportation for agricultural products while linking key routes, including Yagoy Market to Bo and Moyamba to Freetown. He also assured that private sector partners have been secured to accelerate oil palm production and facilitate the completion of the road rehabilitation.
Paramount Chief Alhaji AB Sheriff III expressed his support for the progress made but raised urgent issues regarding delays in milling operations and growing impatience among landowners. He emphasised the need for prompt action to avert potential discontent among the youth. In light of these concerns, the Honourable Minister acknowledged the issues and proposed immediate plans to address them. The inspection team confirmed that only the footpath of the bridge remained unfinished before its handover. The Mattru Jong area is deemed critical for the expansion of Sierra Leone’s oil palm sector, aiming to reduce market prices and improve the livelihoods of the local population.
