A group of ECOWAS Parliamentarians recently visited Sierra Leone to experience its hospitality and familiarize themselves with the country’s history. Led by the Ministry of Tourism and Cultural Affairs, the visit included a tour of the Peace Museum, a legacy project of the Residual Special Court for Sierra Leone.
During the visit, the Minister of Tourism and Cultural Affairs, Nabeela Tunis, introduced the Parliamentarians to the Registrar of the Peace Museum, Binta Mansaray, who welcomed them and shared the museum’s significance in honouring the victims of the war and contributing to the peace process. The Outreach Coordinator, Patrick Fatoma, provided insights into the war’s history, the peace process, and the memorial garden dedicated to the victims.
Hon. Umeoji Chukwuma Michael from Nigeria, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to learn from Sierra Leone’s past and emphasized the country’s resilience in overcoming challenges. He commended the people of Sierra Leone for preserving their history and expressed optimism for a peaceful and prosperous future.
The tour also included key figures such as the Director of Culture, Foday Jalloh, Monument and Relics Commission Chairman, Joseph Kaifala, and Senior Tourist Officer, Tamba S. Bundor. Together, they highlighted the importance of the Peace Museum as a memorial, research, and historical site for both locals and visitors, housing significant documents related to the Special Court Public Archives and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission records.
The visit served as a reminder of the devastating impact of war and the importance of preserving history for future generations. It highlighted Sierra Leone’s efforts towards peacebuilding and reconciliation, showcasing the country’s commitment to healing and moving forward.
Overall, the ECOWAS Parliamentarians’ visit to the Peace Museum was a valuable experience that deepened their understanding of Sierra Leone’s past and its journey towards peace. It underscored the significance of cultural heritage in fostering unity and resilience in the face of adversity.
