NRA rolls out 10,000 Smart GST machines countrywide

In a coordinated move to improve GST collection and update the electronic recording of business transactions, the National Revenue Authority (NRA) has begun distributing 10,000 new Smart Goods and Services Tax (GST) machines nationwide. The rollout, announced Monday, is intended to increase the accuracy and integrity of taxable sales records, while supplementing the Authority’s current Electronic Cash Register system.

NRA officials said the Smart GST machines would help businesses maintain better records, improve tax compliance, enhance transparency of commercial transactions and reduce the chances of revenue leakages. The Authority will also provide a continuous program of technical support and sensitisation for business operators to ensure that merchants understand how to use the devices and integrate them into their daily operations.

The initiative is a critical part of the NRA’s domestic revenue mobilisation drive, according to Commissioner General Abu Martin Kanneh, who made the remarks at a distribution and awareness event. He appealed to the business community to work together, saying the “Smart GST machines will help business and the Government by encouraging record-keeping and compliance, and building customer confidence.”

Mr Kanneh also called on media practitioners and journalists to help raise public awareness and motivate customers to demand GST receipts for taxable purchases. To ensure accountability and transparency, the NRA reiterated that GST-registered companies must provide valid GST receipts for all taxable transactions. We encourage customers to request and keep these receipts.
