Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee in the Parliament of Sierra Leone, who doubles as the Deputy Speaker of Parliament, on Monday 2nd September 2024, accorded the Northern Bureau Chief for the Sierra Leone News Agency (SLENA) and senior correspondent for the Sierra Leone Broadcasting Cooperation (SLBC) – Hassan Bruz, a standing ovation.

This is in recognition of his steadfastness in the field of journalism and dedicated service to the People of Sierra Leone, and Port Loko District in particular. The Honorable Deputy Speaker, who is also a veteran Member of Parliament, made the accord at the Port Loko District Council Conference Hall, where the Parliamentary Committee on Public Accounts was conducting hearings for both the Local Councils in the North West Region and several others across the Country that were stood down due to improper accountability related issues.

The Deputy Speaker and Chairman of the Committee asked all those in attendance to kindly recognize the veteran Journalist for his outstanding performance and quality of work over the years. Hon. Tawa Conteh explained how Hassan Bruz had immensely contributed to the promotion of issues of accountability and transparency. “The pattern in which Hassan Bruz compiles and reports his News Materials in that part of the Country is very much impressive and worthy of emulation by younger practitioners in the field of journalism” – the Deputy Speaker outlined.

While admonishing him to keep up the good hard work, Hon Tawa Conteh called on members of the respective Local Councils and all those in attendance to join him in commending the journalist for his exemplary service. It turned out to be an unbelievable red-letter day for Hassan Bruz, who seemed humbled by such a wonderful recognition. Hassan Bruz was however overwhelmed with delight and could hardly express outright delight. “The Deputy Speaker of Parliament and Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee has made my day. It is unbelievable that this happened amid a galaxy of Members of Parliament and a classified set of respectable Stakeholders. I am very highly appreciative to the Deputy Speaker, the Honoured Members of Parliament and all Distinguished Ladies and Gentlemen present” he said to a battery of journalists that were in attendance.
