What began as an ordinary Cabinet meeting of Sierra Leone paid a special tribute to His Excellency President Dr Julius Maada Bio on Wednesday, for his successful tenure as Chairman of the Authority of ECOWAS Heads of State and Government from June 2025 to July 2026. The spontaneous move was a salute to the leadership of President Bio in raising the profile of Sierra Leone across West Africa and beyond over a year of intensive regional engagement.
The Vice President, Dr Mohamed Juldeh Jalloh, accompanied by Cabinet Ministers, presented the President with a signed appreciation citation and a commemorative plaque recognising his leadership of the regional bloc. The plaque was modelled after those which President Bio had earlier given to other West African Heads of State during the ECOWAS Mid-Year Summit hosted in Sierra Leone in 2026, organisers said. The symbolic exchange highlighted the country’s position as a reliable hub for regional diplomacy and cooperation.
The Chief Minister said, speaking at the presentation, that President Bio’s chairmanship was a watershed moment in the diplomatic history of Sierra Leone. He commended the President for his “visionary leadership, commitment to regional peace and security and unswerving commitment” to the integration agenda of ECOWAS. The Chief Minister cited the successful Mid-Year Summit as an example of leadership, complimenting the size and organisation of the event which attracted 11 Heads of State and special guests, over 2,000 visitors and more than 500 delegates.
He called the summit “one of the biggest diplomatic meetings in the country’s history” and praised the coordination that made it peaceful, well-managed and widely viewed as a success. The Chief Minister said the summit had proved Sierra Leone’s ability to host major international events and raised the profile of the country as a credible regional leader. “I believe President Bio’s legacy of service, collaboration and strategic vision will continue to inspire future generations,” he said.
President Bio told members of Cabinet that he was surprised, saying that he did not expect the honour. He made the dry comment that, given his military background, surprises tended to be tactical measures used against an enemy, not something a soldier expected to be on the receiving end of. He thanked the Vice President, Chief Minister and other Ministers and the people of Sierra Leone for the recognition.
The President underscored that the success registered by the ECOWAS Chairmanship and the Mid-Year Summit were achievements of the entire nation and not the success of any individual. He thanked all ministries, departments and agencies, the security sector, development partners and citizens for their inputs towards the success of the regional gathering. “It was teamwork, planning and service,” he said, underlining the fact that Sierra Leoneans can do extraordinary things when they work together and not separately, something he has always believed in.
During the presentation, delegates and officials said Sierra Leone’s hosting of the summit and leadership of ECOWAS at a crucial time presented an opportunity for the country to demonstrate capacity, resilience and professionalism on the continental stage. The event also reinforced West African partnerships and showcased the country’s preparedness to positively contribute to regional peace, security and integration efforts.
The Cabinet ended the ceremony reaffirming its commitment to President Bio’s vision of improving Sierra Leone’s standing in the region and the world through good governance, unity and national service. The Ministers pledged to continue to support policies that would enhance diplomatic engagement, promote stability in the region and position Sierra Leone as a reliable partner in the initiatives of ECOWAS.
As the tribute wrapped up, senior officials called it more than a moment of recognition for one leader, but a celebration of Sierra Leone’s growing diplomatic maturity and capacity to host high-level regional forums, an accomplishment that should boost national pride and inspire continued collective effort in support of the country’s international ambitions.
