In a significant diplomatic gesture, His Excellency Xi Jinping, the President of the People’s Republic of China, has lauded the leadership of Sierra Leone’s President Dr Julius Maada Bio during a bilateral meeting in Beijing.
This meeting took place on the eve of the 9th Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), where both leaders discussed the future of their nations’ partnership. President Xi expressed his admiration for President Bio’s contributions to global peace and security, particularly commending his recent successful tenure as the President of the United Nations Security Council. He highlighted the importance of Sierra Leone’s role in international diplomacy and its commitment to promoting regional stability.
During their discussions, President Xi reaffirmed China’s support for Africa’s advocacy for reforming the UN Security Council and commended President Bio for his leadership within the African Union’s Committee of Ten (C-10), which seeks to enhance Africa’s representation in global governance. In terms of bilateral relations, President Xi Jinping announced plans to strengthen cooperation between China and Sierra Leone across multiple sectors, including agriculture, fisheries, mining, infrastructure development, resource lending initiatives, and security matters.
He also promised increased Chinese development assistance to Sierra Leone, reflecting China’s commitment to supporting the nation’s growth and development. In response, President Bio expressed his heartfelt gratitude for the ongoing support from China, noting the significant advancements made in the China-Sierra Leone relationship. He also highlighted the recent International Fish Export Certification received by Sierra Leone, which is expected to boost trade relations between the two countries.
President Bio stressed the urgent need to tackle the persistent security challenges facing the Sahel region, reaffirming Sierra Leone’s role as a reliable partner and friend to China. Later, President Xi hosted a banquet reception for President Bio and his wife, Fatima Bio, along with other Heads of State, to welcome them ahead of the FOCAC opening ceremony.
