The U.S. Embassy has called for those responsible for the November 26 heinous attacks in Freetown to be held accountable by due process and the rule of law.

In a statement, the U.S. Embassy strongly supports President Bio in his call for national unity and urges all Sierra Leoneans to set aside their differences and work together in the national interest.

“We honour and remember those who gave their lives on Sunday in defence of Sierra Leone’s Constitution and government. We call for those responsible for these heinous attacks to be held accountable by due process and the rule of law”, the Embassy stated.

The U.S. Embassy commends leaders from across the political spectrum for their courage in speaking out against violence and vowed to continue to work in partnership with the Government and the people of Sierra Leone to advance democracy, health, and prosperity.

In his nationwide address to the nation on Sunday night, His Excellence Dr Julius Maada Bio confirmed that most of the leaders behind the attacks at the military armoury and other locations in Freetown, including the Pademba Road Correctional Centre, have been arrested. And Security operations and investigations are ongoing. “We will ensure that those responsible are held accountable through due process,” he stated.

President Bio thanked citizens for complying with the security measures and advised everyone to remain vigilant and cooperate with the security forces. He called on all political leaders, traditional leaders, civil society, and citizens across Sierra Leone to continue working to preserve the peace of our nation. “As your Commander in Chief, I want to assure everybody who is resident in Sierra Leone that we have overcome this challenge, and together, we will continue on the path of progress and development,” he assured.
