Tuesday, September 30, 2025, in New Carrollton, US: Alhaji Fanday Turay, Minister of Transport and Aviation, announced that the country intends to reintroduce commercial train transportation. Minister Turay was speaking at the Civic Day series in the United States on Tuesday, September 30, 2025.
“His Excellency envisions having a train in Sierra Leone as well. To accomplish this, we have already established an agency, and they will start doing the research right now. They will meet with business people shortly after the research is completed, and I believe this is an opportunity for the diaspora as well,” he said, encouraging Sierra Leoneans to get involved and invest.
. “If you know you have a connection with a company that would be interested in doing this project, please after this briefing, you can contact us so we can get on the project together,” according to him.
Train transportation was a major part of the country’s infrastructure, connecting communities and delivering goods in large amounts. “Since President Bio returned, I am sure you are aware of the Waka Fine Bus System that has been implemented, which has reduced the transportation issue of citizens in the country. Every day, these buses transport over 35,000 people throughout Freetown, and they operate not only during the week but also on weekends,” said the Minister of Transport. He stated that there are now discussions about rural transportation, while also highlighting another significant achievement: the decentralisation of license services across the country.
Many people in the room expressed concern about the country’s accident rate. Minister Turay has established mobile units patrolling the highway to deal with emergencies.
“To reduce the high number of accidents on upline roads, the Sierra Leone Road Safety Authority (SLRSA) established a team based in Mile 91 to monitor traffic and remove overcrowded vehicles. Citizens can also report issues by calling the hotline 844,” he said.
The Minister of Transport announced several reforms, including a possible review of the current $25 airport security fee.
