The Sierra Leone Cabinet has given the green light to the Banana Island Seaport Project, a massive undertaking that will be located in the Dublin and Rickett Communities. The proposal was presented to the Cabinet by the Minister of Transport and Aviation, Ambassador Alhaji Fanday Turay Esq., on Wednesday, July 3rd, 2024. The project, estimated to cost a staggering $2 billion, will be spearheaded by the GENTO Group of Companies, led by businessman and philanthropist Mohamed Gento Kamara.

The concession agreement between the Government of Sierra Leone and the GENTO Group of Companies has been approved for the design, financing, construction, and operation of the seaport, logistics port, and harbour terminal on Banana Island. During the construction phase, the project is expected to create over 1000 jobs, with long-term employment opportunities for more than 10,000 individuals within the Port.

Additionally, the project is anticipated to attract investors and potentially generate 50,000 to 100,000 jobs in the region, further boosting economic growth and development.

The Banana Island Seaport Project is a significant milestone for Sierra Leone, as it promises to enhance the country’s maritime infrastructure, increase trade opportunities, and drive economic prosperity. The seaport will not only serve as a key transportation hub but also as a catalyst for job creation and investment in the region.

With the Cabinet’s approval secured, the project is set for Parliament ratification, bringing with it a wave of opportunities for the people of Sierra Leone. As construction begins and the seaport takes shape, it is expected to transform the landscape of Banana Island and contribute to the country’s overall development.

The approval of the Banana Island Seaport Project marks a new chapter in Sierra Leone’s economic growth and prosperity. With the potential to create thousands of jobs and attract investment, the project holds great promise for the future of the country and its people.
