The Sierra Leone Road Safety Authority (SLRSA) and the Sierra Leone Red Cross Society (SLRCS) have formed a strategic partnership to improve national road safety and emergency medical response. The two organisations signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) at the SLRSA headquarters on Kissy Road in Freetown, establishing a collaborative framework to improve accident response, first aid capacity, and public awareness of safe driving.
The SLRSA and SLRCS will collaborate on several priority areas, including providing first aid training to responders and members of the public, improving coordination during road traffic crashes, and sustaining road safety education campaigns. The agreement is intended to ensure that crash victims receive timely and effective medical care and to increase awareness of road safety practices in communities throughout Sierra Leone.
At the signing ceremony, SLRSA Executive Director James Bagie Bio stated that the partnership directly supports the Authority’s mandate to reduce traffic crashes and improve road safety standards. He emphasised that collaborating closely with the Red Cross will improve the capacity to provide prompt medical assistance at crash sites and promote safer driving habits among road users through ongoing public education initiatives.
The Sierra Leone Red Cross Society’s Secretary General and CEO, Kpawuru E.T. Sandy, emphasised the organisation’s long history of providing humanitarian and emergency health services since its founding in 1962. He reiterated the Society’s commitment to assisting vulnerable communities and expressed confidence that the MOU will strengthen Sierra Leone’s overall emergency response system.
Officials from both organisations described the agreement as a significant step toward developing a more coordinated response to road traffic incidents and other emergencies, reinforcing the government’s efforts to save lives and reduce road traffic fatalities. Both the SLRSA and the SLRCS pledged to fully implement the MOU’s provisions and to collaborate to achieve the shared goal of safer roads for all.
