At the 77th World Health Assembly (WHA) in Geneva, Switzerland, Dr. Austin Demby, the Minister of Health for Sierra Leone, gave a motivational speech highlighting the nation’s achievements in healthcare and dedication to enhancing public health systems.
Dr. Demby emphasized Sierra Leone’s new health security architecture, which is focused on prevention, preparedness, and response, in light of the COVID-19 and Ebola experiences. In 2023, Sierra Leone launched the Universal Health Preparedness and Response Flagship Initiative as a demonstration of its dedication to maintaining public health. Another illustration of an anticipatory approach to managing emergencies and disease outbreaks is the establishment of the National Public Health Agency.
Through the Innovative Life Stages Approach, Sierra Leone has been implementing Universal Health Coverage, ensuring that its citizens have access to comprehensive healthcare for the entirety of their lives. Dr Demby underscored the determination of the government to strengthen health systems and advance the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030. He reported sharp declines in the rates of infant and maternal mortality along with notable rises in vaccination rates as a result of the introduction of new vaccines, such as the malaria vaccine. President Julius Madda Bio was praised by the Minister for his leadership in public health response and readiness.
Recognizing the assistance provided by international organizations and development partners, especially the World Health Organization, Dr. Demby urged continued cooperation to guarantee high-quality healthcare services for everyone. To address health disparities, improve health systems, and guarantee health security in line with governmental priorities, he called on the WHO and other partners to offer technical advice and assistance.
To achieve the goal of comprehensive health for all, Dr Demby thanked healthcare professionals and partners for their commitment and selflessness. She also urged cooperation and group effort. During the 77th World Health Assembly, delegates from various countries reaffirmed their dedication to promoting global health and deliberated on approaches to surmount present health obstacles, underscoring the significance of global collaboration and assistance.
As Dr. Demby pointed out, Sierra Leone’s accomplishments in public health are evidence of the nation’s commitment to enhancing healthcare and guaranteeing the welfare of its people.
