The First Lady of Sierra Leone, Dr Fatima Maada Bio, has spearheaded the “Hands Off Our Girls” campaign in collaboration with the Ministry of Social Welfare and the Anti-Trafficking in Persons Task Force. Her deeds have shown an incredible degree of dedication and leadership in the struggle against human trafficking. A big step forward was made in the fight against this horrible crime when the campaign was formally launched at the Freetown City Council Hall.

In her keynote address at the launch event, Her Excellency Dr Fatima Maada Bio addressed the grave issue of human trafficking and emphasised the urgent need to address and eradicate this threat. She told the horrifying tale of a 17-year-old girl who, having fallen for false promises of a better future, was exploited and mistreated in her own country. This poignant story catalyzed increased awareness of the terrible realities that many victims of human trafficking must face as well as support for those survivors.

Her Excellency announced plans to incorporate anti-trafficking messaging in the upcoming free Sanitary Pads campaign, urged mothers to protect their children, and emphasised the value of unity in the fight against human trafficking. She called on the government, partners, and interested parties to back the Trust Fund, which aims to provide targeted support for survivors and successfully fight human trafficking.

In recognition of her steadfast efforts, Dr Fatima Maada Bio was named the National Anti-Human Trafficking Champion; she accepted this honour with pride and modesty. The Minister of Social Welfare, Hon. Melrose Karminty, reiterated the government’s commitment to safeguarding vulnerable populations and guaranteeing freedom from trafficking for all citizens, while the event chairperson, Mrs Narsu Ndemema, emphasised the Trust Fund’s critical role in the government’s anti-trafficking efforts.

The International Organisation for Migration’s Country Representative, Christopher Christodoulies, emphasised the value of providing support to survivors and urged more funding for the Trust Fund. Sierra Leone’s steadfast dedication to preventing human trafficking and protecting its citizens was highlighted by the group’s resolve and commitment at the launch event.
