Sierra Leone’s Ambassador to China, Dr. Abu Bakarr Karim, has formally extended diplomatic relations with New Zealand by handing over his Letters of Credence to Her Excellency Dame Cindy Kiro GNZM, QSO, Governor-General and Commander-in-Chief. This important ceremony, held at Wellington’s prestigious Government House, marked Dr. Karim’s formal appointment as New Zealand’s non-resident High Commissioner.

During the ceremony, Ambassador Karim conveyed warm greetings and best wishes from Sierra Leone’s President, His Excellency Dr. Julius Maada Bio. He emphasized the importance of strengthening friendship and cooperation between Sierra Leone and New Zealand, indicating a shared desire to foster closer ties. Dr. Karim’s role is particularly notable because he is also accredited in ten other countries, demonstrating Sierra Leone’s commitment to broadening its diplomatic reach.

Her Excellency Dame Cindy Kiro warmly welcomed Dr. Karim after receiving his credentials, expressing her hope for a productive and successful tenure as High Commissioner. She emphasized the potential for meaningful collaboration between the two countries in a variety of sectors, including trade, education, and cultural exchange. The event drew a distinguished audience, including high-ranking government officials, traditional leaders, media representatives, and Sierra Leone Embassy staff in Beijing, all of whom emphasized the importance of this diplomatic engagement.

To add to the ceremonial grandeur of the occasion, the New Zealand Defence Force presented Dr. Karim with a guard of honour, a gesture of respect and recognition for his new role. Following the formalities, he signed the Guest Book at the President’s Residence, which marked the official start of his diplomatic duties in New Zealand. Dr. Karim also paid a courtesy visit to His Excellency Mr. Alfredo Perez Bravo, Mexico’s Ambassador and Dean of the Diplomatic Corps, to demonstrate his commitment to international relations. This event highlights Sierra Leone’s ongoing efforts to strengthen international relations, as well as Ambassador Dr. Abu Bakarr Karim’s critical role in advancing the country’s interests on a global scale.
