Led by Hon. Sheku A. F. Bangura, Minister of Finance, a delegation from Sierra Leone attended the African Development Bank Group’s 2024 Annual Meetings in Nairobi, Kenya. Minister Bangura spoke with Vice President for Energy Dr Kevin Kariuki about the energy crisis in Sierra Leone and the challenges facing the sector, including financial and technical losses.
The Minister emphasized that long-term solutions, such as building energy infrastructure and converting to renewable energy, are required. Vice President Kariuki reiterated the AfDB’s pledge to support Sierra Leone’s energy crisis financially and technically.
The vice president offered to present President Bio with a technical paper that would outline strategies for long-term fixes. To break the deadlock surrounding the Bumbuna 2 project, he also suggested that the Minister collaborate with the Africa Legal Assistance Facility.
The Financial Secretary, Chief Economist, Deputy Financial Secretary, and Senior Economist were among the other members of the Sierra Leonean delegation. At the end of the meeting, there was a consensus to collaborate to address Sierra Leone’s energy problems.
