Sierra Leone’s Timothy Musa Kabba and Morocco’s Nasser Bourita

Sierra Leone and Dominica have both recently reaffirmed their support for Morocco’s Autonomy Plan, which they believe offers the most practical, significant, and respectable way to end the conflict in the Western Sahara. These endorsements were affirmed by meetings between the foreign ministers of the Dominican Republic, the United Arab Emirates, Morocco’s Nasser Bourita and Sierra Leone’s Timothy Musa Kabba.

The establishment of a general consulate in Dakhla in 2021 further demonstrated Sierra Leone’s unwavering support for Morocco’s territorial integrity, as stated by Kabba in a joint statement following the negotiations. The two nations’ bilateral relations were further strengthened by Sierra Leone’s attendance at the January 2021 Ministerial Conference in favour of the autonomy proposal under Moroccan sovereignty.

In a similar vein, Vince Henderson, the Minister of Foreign Affairs for Dominica, conveyed the nation’s stance in a joint statement, emphasizing Dominica’s belief that Morocco’s proposal for autonomy represents the only respectable, feasible, and credible way to resolve the Western Sahara conflict. This reaffirmation of support for Morocco’s sovereignty and territorial integrity over its southern provinces in the Western Sahara is consistent with the views of other nations, including Liberia and Saint Kitts and Nevis.

As part of the momentum for South-South cooperation, these nations have praised Morocco for its development efforts in the southern provinces and reaffirmed their commitment to deepening their ties with the North African nation. The backing of Liberia, Dominica, Sierra Leone, and Saint Kitts and Nevis highlights how widely accepted Morocco’s Autonomy Plan is as a workable solution for the Western Sahara conflict.  As Morocco persists in reaching out to nations worldwide to secure backing for its Autonomy Plan, the most recent affirmations from Dominica and Sierra Leone indicate encouraging progress in reaching a peaceful settlement of the Western Sahara conflict. To guarantee stability and prosperity in the region, it is imperative that Morocco’s proposal receive international support and that diplomatic efforts continue. The backing of these nations strengthens Morocco’s Autonomy Plan’s legitimacy and viability as a workable resolution to the Western Sahara conflict.
