The Sierra Leone Correctional Service (SLCS) recently made headlines after dismissing five prison officers involved in drug-related offences.
The swift action taken by the SLCS management came after the discovery of illicit substances in the possession of several officers at the Freetown Male Correctional Centre. Officer 2CCO Musa Samura (2855) was caught with a package suspected to contain marijuana at the main entrance of the facility.
This violation directly contravenes Section 22 (a) of the 2014 SLCS Act, which prohibits the possession or distribution of intoxicating substances within correctional facilities. As a result, Officer Samura was promptly dismissed from the service and handed over to the Sierra Leone Police (SLP) for further investigation. In addition to Officer Samura, four other officers were identified and dismissed for their involvement in drug-related offences.
Officers 2CCO Alimamy Bangura (3814), 3CCO Alhassan Bangura (3974), 3CCO Alpha Morray Kargbo (4226), and 3CCO Alimamy Kamara (3751) were relieved of their duties as part of the SLCS’s zero-tolerance policy towards illicit activities within its correctional facilities. In a statement addressing the public, the SLCS reiterated its commitment to maintaining the integrity and security of its correctional centres. The Service emphasised its dedication to fostering a safe and drug-free environment for staff and inmates. By taking decisive action against officers involved in drug offences, the SLCS aims to uphold the highest standards of professionalism and integrity within its ranks.
The dismissal of these officers serves as a clear message that the SLCS will not tolerate any form of misconduct or illegal activity within its facilities.
