Many see President Julius Maada Bio’s administration’s dropping of all charges against former President Dr Ernest Bai Koroma as a strategic move toward national healing and reconciliation. President Bio’s warm welcome to Koroma at the State House demonstrated his commitment to bridging political divides.
Koroma was charged with treason and misprision of treason in relation to the deadly military uprising and attempted coup of November 2023. He has always denied the allegations. The former Sierra Leonean leader, 72, who has been away from home for more than two years, appeared smiling and relaxed.
Former President Koroma publicly thanked President Bio for his assistance in his return and reiterated his commitment to national unity, peace and development. “I have to be here to thank you personally for the good decision that you made about my return,” Koroma proudly stated.
President Bio said Koroma is of practical and symbolic importance for Sierra Leone and welcomed him on behalf of the Government and people of Sierra Leone.
The President noted Koroma’s experience as a former Head of State and said the country’s progress depends on the collective effort of all citizens, regardless of political affiliation or previous roles. “God put you here before, and only a few of us can be president.
“I am happy you are back home”, President Bio said, stressing a message of national unity. He also cited his role in the national awareness campaign during the height of the Ebola outbreak as an example of how Sierra Leoneans have to come together in times of national crisis.
Observers and supporters say the decision to drop the charges and the conciliatory tone have given many citizens hoping for political stability and forward movement renewed hope. The incumbent and the former president’s engagement was marked by gratitude, recognition, and unity. President Bio chose reconciliation over vengeance and unity over division. ***
