President Dr Julius Maada Bio, who also serves as the Chairman of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), on Thursday, 2nd July 2026, commissioned the Community’s new headquarters in Abuja, describing the edifice as a potent symbol of the shared aspirations of the region. At the inauguration, President Bio called on West African leaders to convert 50 years of institutional integration into real dividends for more than 450 million citizens.

The President described the event as more than a mere unveiling of a structure. “We are not just opening a new headquarters today,” he said. We reiterate our shared belief in the promise of regional integration, African solidarity and the long-term vision of a peaceful, prosperous and united West Africa. He also described the building as the “Eye of West Africa”, a visible symbol of the bloc’s unity and common purpose.
President Bio commended the Nigerian government and people for the unwavering support it has given to ECOWAS since its inception in 1975. He also thanked President Xi Jinping and the Chinese government for donating the headquarters, which he said was a sign of the strategic partnership between China and West Africa. The President acknowledged the architectural magnificence of the new campus but said it is the policies and decisions taken inside the walls of the new campus that will matter.
“The value of this headquarters is not in the steel and glass and concrete,” he said. “It is in the results it will help deliver – policies that make lives better, protect freedoms, broaden opportunities and build peace across our region.” He told leaders and officials to focus on results, not rhetoric, and said citizens expect institutions to tear down trade barriers, create jobs, strengthen security, advance the empowerment of women and provide opportunities for young people.

President Bio did not shy away from the challenges of West Africa. The challenges are insecurity, illegal trade, economic volatility and unconstitutional changes of government, which must be tackled with all seriousness. He reiterated ECOWAS’ commitment to constitutional governance, saying the quality of leadership demonstrated today will determine the region’s future. “The people of West Africa are not waiting for promises,” he said. They’re waiting for the results.”
Looking ahead, the President underscored that ECOWAS Vision 2050 is a road map that requires massive investment in education, technology and entrepreneurship. He said the region’s demographic profile is a unique advantage and urged member states to tap into the energy and creativity of young people through skills development, innovation and access to capital.
President Bio Challenges ECOWAS Commission Leadership and Staff to Uphold the Highest Standards of Integrity and Service. He called on the institution to prioritise citizens in policy-making, with every decision aimed at improving the daily lives of communities in the region.

During the course of the commissioning ceremony, the Nigerian officials and President Bio unveiled a plaque to mark the event, cut a ribbon and symbolically planted a Unity Tree. Guests were taken on a guided tour of the new complex, which organisers say will be used to foster collaboration and will serve as a diplomatic and administrative hub. The proceedings were followed by an official reception for invited dignitaries.
In closing, President Bio urged the leaders of the region to ensure that their generation is remembered for achievements, not for monuments. He said he was confident the new headquarters would serve as a “lasting symbol of African unity, regional solidarity and our shared resolve to forge a brighter future.”
With ECOWAS moving forward with a new headquarters in Abuja, member states and the Commission need to turn the symbolic power of the headquarters into concrete gains in the form of increased economic integration, more robust security arrangements, and more opportunities for the region’s growing population.
