On January 17, 2026, A group of heads of state and other prominent international figures attended President Mamady Doumbouya’s inauguration at the Stade Général Lansana Conté in Conakry, including His Excellency President Dr Julius Maada Bio. After a period of political transition, President Doumbouya was elected, took the oath of office, and reaffirmed Guinea’s commitment to democratic governance and the constitutional order in his inaugural speech.
President Doumbouya promised in his speech to support inclusive policies with a focus on the roles of women and youth, maintain the rule of law, and fortify democratic institutions. Additionally, he pledged to strengthen Guinea’s ties to the world community. In accordance with the ECOWAS Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance, the ceremony represented broader regional aspirations for peace, stability, and peaceful, cooperative political transitions.
Sierra Leone’s support for regional solidarity and its continued commitment to strengthening democratic governance throughout West Africa were emphasised by President Bio’s attendance. Due to their shared history, cultural affinities, and cooperative efforts in trade, digital connectivity, and regional integration, Sierra Leone and Guinea continue to have close bilateral relations.
Numerous dignitaries from throughout Africa and beyond attended the inauguration, including delegations from China, the African Union, and ECOWAS, as well as officials and representatives from Senegal, The Gambia, Rwanda, Mauritania, Gabon, Mali, Nigeria, and Equatorial Guinea. Their presence demonstrated regional and global interest in Guinea’s transition as well as a shared support for cooperative strategies for stability and democratic consolidation.
