Brima Baluwa Koroma, Director General of the National Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NPRA), has officially opened a refurbished retail fuel station operated by NP (SL) Limited in Freetown’s Kissy neighbourhood, marking another step forward in Sierra Leone’s modernisation of its downstream petroleum sector.
Baluwa Koroma praised the Board, management, and employees of NP (SL) Limited at the unveiling ceremony for their ongoing commitment to strengthening the industry through increased product availability and better customer service. He stated that the company has used its long history, corporate culture, and past achievements to boost public trust and drive further business expansion, describing NP (SL) Limited as representing “the past, present, and future” of the country’s downstream petroleum landscape.
The NPRA Director General used the opportunity to encourage the company to continue its expansion, particularly through the construction of critical petroleum infrastructure such as storage facilities and additional retail outlets. He stated that, while the number of operators in the sector has increased, the government is still committed to supporting NP (SL) Limited’s growth, sustainability, and contribution to national revenue.
Baluwa Koroma also highlighted NP’s longevity and recent transformations, such as the adoption of digital innovations that have increased the company’s visibility and competitiveness in the West African sub-region. He emphasised that the company’s strategy is closely aligned with President Julius Maada Bio’s vision of ensuring Sierra Leoneans have access to petroleum products.
Engineer Mohamed S. Kanu, CEO of NP (SL) Limited, expressed personal satisfaction in presiding over what he described as his first unveiling ceremony since returning to the country. He reviewed the NP’s accomplishments in Sierra Leone and discussed the company’s strategic priorities for the coming years.
Ing. Kanu thanked NPRA’s leadership, management, and staff for their ongoing cooperation and support, particularly during difficult times in the industry. He reiterated NP (SL) Limited’s determination to remain a market leader in the face of increased competition, emphasising that the company intends to be proactive rather than reactive in its response to market developments.
Looking ahead, the CEO revealed that, with the approval and support of NPRA management, NP (SL) Limited intends to build five additional modern retail fuel outlets across the country. These planned investments are part of a larger effort to broaden the company’s footprint, improve service delivery, and strengthen the country’s fuel supply infrastructure.
The Kissy ceremony is part of a larger push within Sierra Leone’s petroleum sector to modernise and improve consumer services. With NP’s long-standing presence in the market, adoption of digital tools, and renewed emphasis on infrastructure, both the regulator and the company demonstrated a shared commitment to ensuring reliable access to petroleum products and supporting national development goals.
