MMTU UK Alumni Donates ICT Equipment to Improve Teaching and Learning

On Friday, June 12, 2026, the Milton Margai Technical University (MMTU) received a significant donation of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) equipment from its United Kingdom Alumni Association branch, which the alumni say is intended to strengthen teaching and learning while also supporting administrative needs on campus.
Representatives from the UK Alumni presented five laptop computers, two projectors, and two projection screens at a handover ceremony held in the Great Hall of the Goderich campus in Freetown. The items will be installed in the Great Hall and the Education Department. Additional ICT items were also distributed, with the total value of the donation reported to be more than Le300,000 million New Leones. The UK branch has also agreed to cover the cost of installation so that the equipment can be made available to students and staff as soon as possible.
Mr Ben Jusuf Koroma spoke on behalf of the UK Alumni at the event, emphasising that the gesture is part of an ongoing relationship between alumni in Britain and their alma mater. “This is not our first donation to MMTU,” he said, assuring the university and its community that the UK Alumni will continue to support the institution with similar initiatives.
Another alumnus, Mr Patrick Bangura, explained the donation’s intended impact, stating that the equipment will improve the quality of teaching and learning at MMTU. He urged students to take advantage of the opportunity provided by the gift to further their studies, and he encouraged the administration and student body to regard UK Alumni as reliable partners. He also encouraged students to uphold MMTU’s reputation and take pride in the education they receive there.
Speakers from the UK Alumni Association emphasised the broader purpose of the support: to improve students’ long-term prospects and to position the university to compete more effectively academically. They urged female students, in particular, not to underestimate their male peers from disadvantaged backgrounds, arguing that the collective education provided at MMTU lays the groundwork for future success regardless of background. The alumni stated that the group’s fundraising efforts in the United Kingdom enabled the donation, and that a fact-finding visit to the university last year assisted them in identifying priority needs.
Dr Mohamed Alie Jalloh, Acting Vice Chancellor and Principal of MMTU, accepted the items on behalf of the university and expressed gratitude, stating that the equipment would be used immediately and practically. He emphasised the urgent needs of the Examinations Office, which will directly benefit from the laptops and other resources, and reassured the donors that the items would be used responsibly. Dr Jalloh recalled that previous MMTU cohorts earned a reputation as the “new generation of teachers,” and he stated that alumni engagement demonstrates the long-term bond between graduates and their alma mater.
Dr Jalloh also praised past students for their hard work and for serving as role models for current students. He urged other former students to follow the example set by the UK branch, stating that alumni contributions inspire both current and future cohorts and strengthen the university’s ability to produce capable professionals.
Christiana Pearce, the university registrar, made welcoming remarks and congratulated the UK Alumni on their generosity, wishing them well and thanking them for the warm reception they received on campus. The UK Alumni Association expressed special gratitude to Mrs Zainab Omoyemi (née Tholley) and Mr. Thaimu Kamara, chairman of the UK branch, for their critical roles in making the donation possible.
The singing of the University Anthem, which concluded the formal proceedings and emphasised the institution’s shared identity with its graduates abroad, was a highlight of the ceremony. The donation continues MMTU’s collaboration with its international alumni, and organisers hope it signals the start of additional investments in the university’s ability to provide quality education.
