President Bio and Ambassador Hunt
The U.S. Ambassador to Sierra Leone Ambassador, Bryan Hunt stated in an interview that Sierra Leone has a long way to go to complete the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) Compact program. Ambassador Hunt says the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) doesn’t only look at the scorecard results for a country to receive the Compact.
He said the MCC will make assessments on moving forward with the US$500 million Compact program for Sierra Leone, based on the progress made in the implementation of the provisions of the dialogue agreement. “The scorecard is a first step, certainly an important first step, but it’s a much longer journey,” he said in an interview with AYV News.
MCC and the Government of Sierra Leone partnered to implement a $44.4 million threshold program to improve access to clean water and reliable electricity and to support reforms designed to limit opportunities for corruption. In December 2020, the MCC Board of Directors selected Sierra Leone as eligible to develop a compact. September 13, 2023, MCC announced that its Board received an update on the agency’s portfolio, including the recent elections in Sierra Leone.
Due to concerns with the June election, MCC has diverted from its original timeline for considering approval of a compact. In the spirit of a longstanding partnership, MCC continues to engage with the Government of Sierra Leone. ***
