March 31st, 2024: Sierra Leone Sets Deadline for National ID Card Acquisition

The National Civil Registration Authority (NCRA) of Sierra Leone has announced that all citizens must obtain National Identification Cards by March 31st, 2024. This directive, ratified by Parliament in March 2022, applies to National, Non-National, and ECOWAS ID cards, which are required for accessing various services such as financial transactions, vehicle registration, recruitment, and NASSIT enrollment. Failure to comply may result in individuals being unable to access essential services, including healthcare, education, and employment opportunities. Authorities may also arrest those who fail to obtain the necessary ID cards, as they serve as the primary form of personal identification.

The NCRA, in collaboration with the Sierra Leone Police and the Office of National Security, is working to ensure a smooth transition and assist individuals in obtaining their ID cards. The purpose of this directive is to streamline access to services and enhance the security and accuracy of personal information. The NCRA urges all citizens to take this requirement seriously and make arrangements before the deadline.

To facilitate the process, NCRA offices and designated centres across the country are assisting individuals seeking to obtain or update their ID cards. While the National and Non-National ID cards are mandatory, the ECOWAS ID card is optional. These ID cards not only grant access to essential services but also aid in the fight against identity theft, fraud, and other illegal activities by providing a unique identification number linked to personal information.

As the deadline approaches, the NCRA is intensifying its efforts to raise awareness and ensure compliance. Citizens are encouraged to visit the nearest NCRA office or designated centre for more information and to ensure they meet the requirements before the deadline.
Starting from April 1st, 2024, the NCRA has announced that all residents, including citizens and foreigners, will be required to possess National Identification Cards bearing their National Identification Numbers (NIN). This measure aims to ensure reliable identification and consistency in personal information. National Security Coordinator Abdul Cauker emphasizes the importance of the National Identity Card in accurately identifying individuals and maintaining national security. Inspector General of Police William Sellu echoes this sentiment, highlighting the benefits of standardized identification for law enforcement.
Residents are urged to begin the process of obtaining their National Identity Cards as soon as possible to avoid any last-minute rush. The NCRA has established registration centres across the country and will deploy mobile units to remote areas. Online registration options will also be available for those unable to visit a physical centre.
