Former Liberian President and Nobel Peace Laureate, Her Excellency Dr. Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, recently visited State House in Freetown to extend her congratulations to His Excellency President Dr. Julius Maada Bio on his recent appointment as Chairman of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

During her courtesy call, Dr. Sirleaf expressed her admiration for President Bio’s leadership qualities, emphasizing that his new role comes at a critical juncture for the region, filled with both challenges and opportunities. “With you as the new Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority, we are very pleased and assured that you will deliver,” she said, expressing confidence in his ability to lead effectively. She added, “By the end of your tenure, ECOWAS will be proud of your leadership,” highlighting her belief in his potential to steer the organization toward success.

Dr. Sirleaf, a towering figure in African politics, acknowledged President Bio’s commendable track record in governance, noting his principled approach and unwavering commitment to fostering regional peace and development. Her visit underscored the importance of collaboration among leaders in addressing the pressing issues facing West Africa.

In response, President Bio expressed his gratitude for Dr. Sirleaf’s visit and her enduring friendship. “Madam President, you have always honored me with your presence whenever you’re in Sierra Leone, and you are always welcome here,” he stated warmly. He assured her of his commitment to fulfilling his responsibilities as ECOWAS Chairman, reaffirming his dedication to promoting peace, democracy, human rights, and the empowerment of women and girls—values that both leaders have championed throughout their careers.

The meeting concluded with mutual expressions of hope and solidarity, emphasising a shared vision for the continued progress of the West African region under Sierra Leone’s leadership.
