Dr Isata Mahoi, Chair of the ECOWAS Ministers of Gender, made a pointed call to eliminate the financial barriers that prevent many West African women from participating in politics at a side event held in New York during the Commission on the Status of Women’s 70th session. Speaking on the theme “Breaking the Financial Barriers – Addressing Women’s Political Leadership in West Africa,” she emphasised that, while women are the backbone of communities and economies throughout the region, the costs of candidacy and campaigning, limited access to finance, and entrenched cultural biases continue to limit their political participation.
Dr Mahoi argued that gender balance in governance is critical for strengthening democratic institutions, promoting inclusive development, and contributing to regional stability. She noted that several countries in the Economic Community of West African States are making progress toward achieving a minimum target of 30% women’s representation in governance, but financial barriers remain a significant impediment to larger and faster gains.
The Minister emphasised national reform efforts, citing Sierra Leone’s Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment Act of 2022 as a watershed moment that promotes women’s participation in decision-making and improves women’s access to finance. She used this example to urge ECOWAS member states to implement gender-sensitive political financing mechanisms that level the playing field for female candidates.
Dr Mahoi also advocated for systemic reforms of discriminatory laws and practices, as well as active efforts to challenge cultural narratives that discourage women from pursuing leadership positions. Recognising that no single actor can overcome these obstacles on their own, she urged governments, civil society, the private sector, and international partners to work together to create an enabling environment in which women can lead without facing prohibitive financial constraints.
Her message was clear: removing financial barriers to women’s political leadership will strengthen democracy, accelerate development, and contribute to a more inclusive future in West Africa.
