The University of Sierra Leone (USL) made history on March 13, 2024, when it named Paramount Chief Dr. Magrette Darboh as its new Chancellor. Dr. Darboh, the first female Chancellor appointed by USL, has a master’s degree in Curriculum Development from the University of Sussex in the United Kingdom and a PhD in Education with a focus on Early Childhood Education from Fourah Bay College-USL.

Dr. Darboh has taught at the former Freetown Teachers’ College, now Freetown Polytechnic, and is currently a Lecturer in Early Childcare and Development at FBC-USL. Her appointment as Chancellor demonstrates a commitment to excellence and aims to inspire young Sierra Leonean girls to dream big.

During the installation ceremony, Prof. Aiah Lebbie, Ag. Vice Chancellor and Principal of USL, described the event as historic, paving the way for future generations of knowledgeable students. He emphasized that Dr. Darboh’s appointment demonstrates a commitment to educational excellence and innovative thinking.

Dr. Ramatulai Wurie, Minister of Technical and Higher Education, emphasized the role of the Chancellor in embodying the university’s values and leading it to excellence and inclusivity. She expressed confidence in Dr Darboh’s leadership in maintaining academic rigour and integrity at USL.

Dr. Wurie recognized the Oversight Committee’s role in guiding the university through a period of transition and reestablishing stability. She thanked the Committee for their dedication and expertise in resolving issues at USL.

Dr. Darboh thanked President Bio and MTHE for believing in her leadership abilities. She promised to adhere to the Universities Act of 2021 and work to restore USL’s reputation as the “Athens of West Africa.”

Munda Lebbie, Ag. The registrar at USL expressed gratitude to everyone who contributed to the ceremony’s success in his vote of thanks. He emphasized the Chancellor’s vision for academic excellence and growth at the university.

As Dr. Darboh assumes her new role as Chancellor, the USL community envisions a future characterized by unity, determination, and a dedication to excellence. Dr. Darboh’s appointment is a significant milestone in USL history, ushering in a new era of leadership and inspiration for both students and faculty.
