Dr Ibrahim Bangura (DIB)
The All People’s Congress (APC), Sierra Leone’s main opposition party, is increasingly rallying around Dr Ibrahim Bangura (DIB) as its preferred presidential candidate for the 2028 election, convinced that he provides the most direct path to ousting the ruling Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP).
Following Dr Samura Kamara’s two unsuccessful presidential bids, senior APC officials are now arguing that a younger, more dynamic candidate will better capture the electorate’s desire for change. Party insiders say the decision is based on both political strategy and public sentiment.
Many APC members see Dr Bangura as a “clean slate,” untainted by previous electoral defeats and capable of bridging generational gaps. Supporters emphasise his appeal to younger voters, known as “Gen Z,” while also noting that respected elders in the party and across communities are willing to endorse him. In a country plagued by economic hardship and a collapsing public service delivery system, APC strategists believe a revitalised image and new leadership could present a compelling alternative to the current government.
A senior APC official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, told the Gleaner Newspaper that the party sees DIB as its best chance in 2028.
“Among us at the party, we know that DIB is the right man for the 2028 elections, and we will not let this opportunity pass; we want to reclaim State House and restore Sierra Leone to its glory days,” the official said, adding that the party’s confidence in winning the next election is high and that they will rally support for the candidate.
Backers frequently cite Dr Ibrahim Bangura’s experience in conflict resolution and state management as evidence of his readiness to govern and address the country’s complex governance challenges. His increased public visibility has led to endorsements and acceptance beyond narrow party lines, with observers noting growing recognition of his profile across multiple regions and age groups.
With the 2028 election approaching, APC strategists appear to be shifting away from previous ticket choices in favour of a candidate who they believe combines credibility, youthful energy, and broad appeal. If party unity around Dr Bangura is maintained, the APC’s chances of regaining power and presenting a clear alternative to the SLPP could be significantly improved.
