Commonwealth Deputy Secretary-General meets Sierra Leone’s High Commissioner to bolster partnership and discuss shared priorities

London – Monday 21st September, 2026-Ambassador Tanmaya Lal, the Deputy Secretary-General of the Commonwealth for Programs, paid a courtesy visit to Sierra Leone’s High Commissioner to the UK, His Excellency Dr Morie Komba Manyeh, at the Sierra Leone High Commission in London. The meeting brought together senior mission staff and allowed both sides to review areas of mutual interest and identify opportunities to strengthen collaboration between Sierra Leone and the Commonwealth Secretariat.
Ambassador Lal is an Indian career diplomat with nearly 35 years of experience in bilateral and multilateral affairs. He joined his current role in March 2026, following a distinguished career that included senior positions in India’s Ministry of External Affairs, diplomatic postings to the United Nations, and assignments in Africa and Europe. His visit to the High Commission reflected the Secretariat’s commitment to working closely with member states and ensuring its programs respond to national and regional priorities.
In their conversation, the two men discussed how to make the Commonwealth more relevant and visible and agreed to focus on increasing support for developing and vulnerable member states. They pointed out the need to respect the principles of sovereign equality and forge effective partnerships across the Commonwealth that deliver tangible results to the citizens.
Key themes included climate change, youth empowerment, trade and investment, and the implications of digitalisation and artificial intelligence. Both sides stressed the importance of skill development and technology transfer as key enablers to ensure that developing countries are not left behind in the digital and technological transition. The discussion also covered concrete ways of cooperation that could lead to direct benefits for member states through shared values and commitments.
Ambassador Lal also highlighted the Commonwealth Secretariat’s work in Africa, and efforts to build on that work to deepen collaboration with regional and continental bodies, avoid duplication of programs, and respond better to the priorities of member states. High Commissioner Manyeh reiterated Sierra Leone’s strong commitment to the Commonwealth under the leadership of His Excellency President Julius Maada Bio and stressed the need to translate cooperation into tangible development results.
The engagement highlighted Sierra Leone’s strong relationship with the Commonwealth Secretariat and a shared commitment to deepen cooperation for the benefit of Sierra Leone and the Commonwealth community as a whole.
