The Chief Minister of Sierra Leone, Dr. David Moinina Sengeh has kicked off the inaugural steering committee meeting on the recommendations of the Cross-Party on Electoral Systems and Management Bodies Review Report, also dubbed as the ‘tripartite report’.

The objective of the steering committee is to oversee the full implementation of the recommendations of the ‘tripartite report’.

The steering committee members include ministers of government and civil society organizations (CSOs).

The Chief Minister told members of the inaugural meeting that after a cabinet conclusion on the implementation of the recommendations of the tripartite report, President Julius Maada Bio decided to set up a steering committee, adding that the meeting was a follow-up to that cabinet conclusion.

“The inaugural meeting is to establish the steering committee, its lifespan, terms of reference, and rules of engagement. This committee needs to understand what the immediate deliverables are,” he told his audience.

He said they should own the tripartite report, study it, and link it to the ongoing reforms within the country, which include the constitutional review.

“We will set up a Secretariat, which should comprise legal, finance, and communications experts. There should also include institutional development experts and analysts in the public sector,” he said.

The committee members expressed their desire for the report to be accessible, citing that it should be child and disabled-friendly.
Similarly, they agreed to develop a detailed work plan, expand the committee, thereby bringing in additional members, and embark on school-level activities such as debates, letter writing and concerts on the recommendations of the tripartite report.
The Chief Minister concluded that he had strict directives from President Bio to ensure the implementation of the reforms emanating from the recommendations that will strengthen our democracy.
