President Julius Maada Bio
President Julius Maada Bio has directed his cabinet to move quickly from policy to results, urging ministers to implement policies that will result in visible improvements in Sierra Leoneans’ daily lives.
Speaking at a cabinet retreat and presiding over the first ministerial meeting of 2026, the President reiterated the themes of his New Year’s address, in which he declared 2026 to be a decisive Year of Action.
“My message to all Ministers is unequivocal: this must be a year of decisive action—one in which we not only accelerate our country’s progress but also implement meaningful steps that will significantly impact Sierra Leoneans’ lives,” the President told his cabinet. He stated that the government will focus on providing tangible benefits in the areas of livelihoods, public services, food security, and economic stability.
President Bio acknowledged the economic strains on households in his New Year’s Day national address, including global pressures that have raised living costs and reduced fiscal space. Nonetheless, he expressed confidence that Sierra Leone has entered 2026 with greater stability and realism, making it better positioned to put reforms into action. He stated that the government’s recent difficult decisions were intended to stabilise the economy and rebuild trust.

The President stressed that 2026 would not be a year of empty promises. Instead, he advocated for sound decision-making, integrity in governance, and prudent use of public resources. He emphasised that national progress necessitates not only government initiatives, but also civic responsibility, integrity, and collaborative effort on the part of all citizens.
Feed Salone remains a key component of the administration’s agenda, designated as one of the “Big Five Game Changers.” President Bio reiterated his commitment to achieving food security, creating jobs, and fostering national self-sufficiency through increased agricultural production, improved market access, and increased youth involvement in agribusiness. These steps, he said, are critical to improving livelihoods and decreasing reliance on imports.
In terms of human capital and social issues, the President emphasised the importance of continued investment in quality education and stronger healthcare systems. He also reaffirmed his commitment to combating drug abuse, particularly Kush, by combining strong law enforcement with prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation programs that address both supply and demand.
Economic diversification remains a top government priority. President Bio outlined plans to broaden the economy by expanding agriculture, fisheries, mining, tourism, renewable energy, and the digital economy. He emphasised the importance of creating a conducive environment for small and medium-sized businesses, as well as making Sierra Leone appealing to credible investors.
Looking ahead to the 2028 general elections, the President urged political actors to act responsibly, uphold the rule of law, and keep the country peaceful. He also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to carrying out the Tripartite Agreement’s reforms to strengthen democratic trust and electoral credibility.
