On Sunday, May 10, 2026, members of AWOL UK, in collaboration with AWOL Sierra Leone, delivered a significant consignment of medical supplies to Rokupa Government Hospital in the eastern part of Freetown. The donation is part of the organisation’s ongoing efforts to support vulnerable communities and improve healthcare delivery in facilities that care for a large number of patients under difficult circumstances.
Wheelchairs, mattresses, blankets, Zimma frames, medical trolleys, baby packs, and a variety of other essential clinical supplies were distributed to improve patient comfort and help hospital staff provide care more effectively. Hospital officials stated that several of the donated items were immediately distributed to patients and wards in need.
AWOL UK Vice Chairman Mohamed Jalloh presented the supplies on behalf of the UK chapter, reaffirming the charity’s commitment to humanitarian service and community support. According to Jalloh, AWOL is a charity based in the United Kingdom that helps the less fortunate while also maintaining long-term relationships with health institutions. “The Rokupa Government Hospital is one of the most important hospitals serving the eastern part of Freetown, dealing with an overwhelming number of cases every day,” he said, adding that the hospital’s and the local community’s gratitude motivates AWOL to continue engaging its supporters to sustain such interventions.

Speaking at the presentation, Ahmed Sahid Nasralla, Chairman of AWOL Sierra Leone, praised the hospital’s management and staff for their dedication and sacrifices. He stated that AWOL aims to supplement government efforts in nation-building through selfless giving and targeted projects. Nasralla emphasised the organisation’s broader work, which includes recognising outstanding individuals and institutions through the National Achievement Awards and supporting education initiatives such as the annual June 16 Day of the African Child celebrations.

Senior Matron Fatmata Musa Kamara, who received the items on behalf of the hospital, described the donation as both timely and impactful. She stated that several items had already been delivered to beneficiaries and thanked AWOL for its consistent support. “AWOL has been supporting Rokupa Government Hospital even before my arrival here, and they have remained one of the organisations that have consistently assisted us over the years,” she said, adding that the supplies will significantly improve the hospital’s services to the community.
Matron Kamara also announced plans to rename one of the hospital’s wards the “AWOL Ward” in honour of the organisation’s long-standing support, particularly for the construction of the hospital’s Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU). The proposed naming is intended to serve as a formal acknowledgement of AWOL’s contributions while also strengthening the charity’s relationship with the facility it supports.
Three women who recently gave birth at Rokupa Government Hospital witnessed the handover ceremony. Each was given a baby pack as a symbolic gesture, and they expressed gratitude for what they described as a timely intervention that will help mothers and newborns at a critical time.
AWOL’s donation highlights the importance of diaspora-led charities in strengthening local healthcare infrastructure and providing practical assistance that can be used immediately by overburdened hospitals and clinics.
