Monday, October 20, 2025. The Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Alpha Sesay, addressed participants of the Senior Command and Staff Course 3 at Horton Command and Staff College, Imatt, Freetown, stressing the essential role of the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF) in upholding
Constitutional governance and strengthening of democratic institutions.
In his guest lecture, Mr Sesay praised the RSLAF for its professionalism, discipline, and long-standing commitment to peace and national stability. He emphasised that the military’s responsibilities go far beyond traditional defence tasks, including defending democracy and the rule of law.
The Attorney General’s remarks addressed several pressing issues, including respect for the national constitution, human rights protection, gender inclusion, the need for electoral reforms, and how the military can contribute positively to good governance. He contended that constitutional literacy and a strong commitment to human rights are critical building blocks for a resilient, inclusive democracy.
“It was a great honour to engage with our loyal and dedicated officers.” Mr Sesay remarked about the interactive session that followed his presentation. He added that the exchanges during the lecture reinforced the idea that civilian authorities and the armed forces share responsibility for safeguarding Sierra Leone’s governance architecture. “Our discussions reaffirmed the shared responsibility between civilian and military institutions in safeguarding Sierra Leone’s governance architecture,” he observed.
This engagement at Horton Command and Staff College is part of the Ministry of Justice’s ongoing initiatives to broaden civic and constitutional education across sectors. The ministry’s goal is to foster a culture of accountability, respect for human rights, and inclusive national development by raising civilian and military leaders’ awareness of constitutional obligations.
