Ekaterinburg, 2026 – During the plenary session of the Youth Economic Forum in Ekaterinburg, His Excellency Ambassador Mohamed Yongawo, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Sierra Leone to the Russian Federation, was recognised for his distinguished leadership and persistent efforts to strengthen bilateral relations between Sierra Leone and Russia. The award, presented at a high-profile gathering of young leaders and policymakers, recognises Ambassador Yongawo’s long-term diplomatic engagement and proactive outreach to academic, business, and investment communities.
According to the University Administration, the award recognises Ambassador Yongawo’s exceptional collaboration with Russian educational institutions, commercial partners, and potential investors—initiatives that have tangibly advanced mutual interests and opened new channels of cooperation. Since presenting his letters of credence, His Excellency has consistently advanced Sierra Leone’s foreign policy priorities, focusing on attracting investment, strengthening institutional ties, and fostering human capital development through education and technological advancement.

Under his leadership, nearly 200 Sierra Leonean students are currently studying in the Russian Federation in a variety of disciplines, a development cited as evidence of the two countries’ growing educational and cultural ties. Ambassador Yongawo participated in high-level discussions and spoke directly with youth delegates from over 140 universities, reinforcing international dialogue and common development goals.

The award serves as both a recognition of past achievements and an encouragement to continue collaborating. According to observers, the award emphasises the strategic importance of continued diplomatic engagement in facilitating educational exchanges, investment opportunities, and long-term cooperation between Sierra Leone and the Russian Federation.
