President Dr Julius Maada Bio presided over the swearing-in ceremony for Mr Ahmed Saybom Kanu as the new Deputy Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources, assuring both the Minister and her deputy of his administration’s full support as they pursue sector objectives and reforms.
Mr Prince E. O. Cole, Secretary to the Cabinet and Head of Civil Service, administered the oath of office. Mr Cole informed the President that Mr Kanu’s appointment had been followed by the necessary parliamentary vetting and approval, stating that Members of Parliament had reviewed and confirmed the nomination. He also cited Section 57 of Sierra Leone’s 1991 Constitution as the basis for the swearing-in ceremony, explaining that it allows the Deputy Minister to formally assume his office’s duties.
During the ceremony, Mr Kanu took the prescribed oath and promised to faithfully carry out the duties of his office as required by law. In brief remarks, he expressed his gratitude to President Bio for placing his trust in him and allowing him to serve again in government. “It’s not easy to get a second chance to serve. Mr Kanu stated, “I am deeply honoured by this appointment and committed to working diligently to justify the President’s confidence in me.”
Mr Kanu also highlighted his close working relationship with the Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources, stating that their collaboration would be critical to advancing the President’s vision for the fisheries sector. While acknowledging the significant challenges that fisheries and marine resource management face, he reiterated his commitment to ongoing reforms and collaborative efforts to drive meaningful progress and better outcomes for Sierra Leoneans.
President Bio congratulated the newly sworn-in Deputy Minister and thanked Members of Parliament for carefully considering and approving the appointment. The President reminded Mr Kanu that he was no stranger to public service and governance, and that such experience helps him understand the responsibilities and expectations that come with ministerial office.
President Bio reaffirmed his continued support for the sector, promising to support the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources as it implements reforms and pursues the government’s objectives. He expressed confidence that the Minister and her Deputy would work effectively together to deliver tangible results that meet Sierra Leoneans’ aspirations and needs.
