Her Excellency Francess Virginia Anderson and His Excellency Ambassador İsmet Korukoğlu

In a diplomatic engagement aimed at enhancing educational cooperation, His Excellency Ambassador İsmet Korukoğlu of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus paid a courtesy visit to Her Excellency Francess Virginia Anderson, PhD, the Sierra Leone Ambassador to Türkiye. The meeting focused on the status of Sierra Leonean students studying in Northern Cyprus and the potential for further academic collaboration between the two regions. Ambassador Korukoğlu’s visit was primarily centred on discussing educational opportunities available to Sierra Leonean students in Northern Cyprus, a region recognized for its welcoming environment and diverse academic offerings. With several universities providing a wide array of programs in fields such as engineering, medicine, business, and social sciences, Northern Cyprus has become an increasingly attractive destination for African students seeking higher education. During the meeting, Ambassador Korukoğlu expressed his enthusiasm for strengthening ties and fostering collaboration in the educational sector. He congratulated Ambassador Anderson on her recent presentation of her Letter of Credence and emphasized his readiness to work together throughout her tenure. The discussion included an update on the current status of Sierra Leonean students in Northern Cyprus, revealing that approximately 350 students were enrolled in various courses during the 2023/2024 academic year. Notably, this number is expected to rise as interest in educational opportunities in the region continues to grow. Ambassador Korukoğlu also proposed the drafting and signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to facilitate collaboration between the University of Sierra Leone and universities in Northern Cyprus. He highlighted the numerous benefits such partnerships could yield, including enhanced cultural understanding, improved academic opportunities, and increased access to resources. Such collaborations could also generate economic benefits, bolster global competitiveness, and develop essential skills for the workforce while fostering collaborative research efforts that could contribute to advancements in various fields. In response, Ambassador Anderson expressed gratitude for the informative meeting and the update on Sierra Leonean students. She acknowledged the importance of the proposed educational collaboration and assured Ambassador Korukoğlu of her commitment to further discussions on the matter. “Your Excellency, we will surely continue more engagements on your proposed Educational Collaboration with the Tertiary Education system. Thank you for your visit,” she stated. The meeting marks a pivotal step towards strengthening educational ties between the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and Sierra Leone, paving the way for enhanced opportunities for students and fostering a spirit of cooperation that could benefit both nations in the long run. As both ambassadors look forward to future engagements, the commitment to educational advancement remains a priority, promising a brighter future for Sierra Leonean students in Northern Cyprus.
