Linda Thomas-Greenfield, US Ambassador to the United Nations, had a fruitful discussion with Sierra Leonean President, Julius Maada Bio, during a significant meeting held on the sidelines of the General Assembly. This meeting highlighted the strong diplomatic ties between the United States and Sierra Leone, as well as the collaborative efforts both countries are making to address pressing global and regional issues.

Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield began the meeting by extending her heartfelt congratulations to President Bio on Sierra Leone’s successful UN Security Council presidency in August. This achievement not only demonstrates Sierra Leone’s growing international influence but also reaffirms the country’s commitment to addressing critical regional and global issues. The Ambassador expressed gratitude for the strong partnership that has developed between the United States and Sierra Leone, emphasizing the importance of ongoing collaboration on multiple fronts.

The ongoing reform of the UN Security Council, which is a priority for the US government, was a major topic of discussion. Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to this reform, emphasizing the inclusion of two permanent seats for African nations. This move is viewed as critical to ensuring that African voices are adequately represented in global decision-making processes, particularly on issues of peace and security.

The discussion also expanded on the larger context of African leadership in addressing critical issues affecting the continent. Both leaders recognized the critical need for effective governance and stability in places like Sudan and the Sahel, where conflicts and humanitarian crises have erupted. Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield and President Bio recognized the critical role that African nations play in promoting peace and security, emphasizing the need for regional solutions to these challenges.

This meeting not only highlighted the strong relationship between the United States and Sierra Leone, but also emphasized the shared commitment to advancing peace, security, and effective governance across Africa. The discussions established a positive tone for future collaboration on regional and global issues.
