The Sierra Leone Ports and Harbours Authority (SLPHA) held its inaugural meeting for the newly constituted Board of Directors today 9th July 2024 at the Authority’s Conference Room.
This significant event was followed by an induction workshop for Board members, marking the beginning of a new era for the SLPHA under the new Sierra Leone Ports & Harbours Authority Act, of 2023.
In his opening remarks, Chairman of the Board of Directors, Hon. Manso A. Dumbuya, OOR; emphasized the expertise and commitment of the new Board members. He expressed gratitude to the Minister of Transport and Aviation, Hon. Alhaji Amb. Fanday Turay, for his pivotal role in pioneering the new Port Act.
Chairman Dumbuya shared his optimism that the Board, composed of a diverse pool of experts, would drive the vision of the new Act and meet the expectations of President Brigadier (Rtd) Julius Maada Bio.
Dr. Alex Price Harding, Chairman of the National Commission for Privatization (NCP), echoed similar sentiments. He praised the Board’s diversity and highlighted the importance of clearly defined roles of the Board and Management to prevent conflicts and promote development.
Hon. Alhaji Fanday Turay, Minister of Transport and Aviation, delivered a keynote address, underscoring the significance of the SLPHA in Sierra Leone’s economic development. He stated, “This Port is not merely a gateway for goods and services, but a lifeline connecting us to global markets, fostering trade, investment, and economic growth.”
The Minister highlighted the maritime industry’s challenges and opportunities, including evolving global trade dynamics, technological advancements, and the need for sustainable practices. He urged the new Board to prioritize several key areas including:
1. Good Governance: Uphold the highest standards of governance, transparency, and accountability.
2. Strategic Vision: Develop and implement a strategic plan that aligns with national development goals, focusing on enhancing port infrastructure and operational efficiency.
3. Sustainability: Ensure sustainable practices that minimize environmental impact and embrace green technologies.
4. Innovation: Leverage the latest technologies to modernize port operations and enhance efficiency, security, and transparency.
5. Stakeholder Engagement: Foster strong relationships with government agencies, private sector partners, and local communities.
6. Capacity Building: Invest in human resources development to ensure the workforce has the necessary skills and knowledge.
The Minister concluded with a message of confidence and hope, stating, “With the leadership and guidance of this new Board, I am confident that we will achieve our goals and position our Ports and Harbours as key drivers of national development.”
The inaugural meeting and induction workshop set a promising tone for the future of Sierra Leone’s maritime sector. With a focus on governance, innovation, and sustainability, the new Board is poised to navigate the challenges ahead and chart a course towards a prosperous future for the Sierra Leone Ports and Harbours Authority.
