Minister of Lands, Housing, and Country Planning, Dr Turad Senesie, received an update on the progress of the Resilient Urban Sierra Leone Project (RUSLP), a pivotal initiative aimed at elevating urban planning and development nationwide. The focus of the briefing was on component one, specifically the review of the Town and Country Planning Acts and the formulation of a structural plan for the western area.

During the meeting at the Ministry, Dr. Senesie emphasized the necessity of ensuring that project deliverables are not only practical and advantageous, but also contribute to building local capacity and providing essential tools for effective work. He underscored the importance of implementing a sustainability plan and urged the project team to ensure timely delivery.

RUSLP component one aims to address institutional and capacity development in integrated urban management, with two closely related sub-components focusing on urban planning. The overarching goal is to enhance urban resilience and sustainable development in Sierra Leone, particularly in the western area.

Currently, the consultant for the review of the Town and Country Planning Act is actively engaging with key government stakeholders, local council representatives, professional bodies, community leaders, groups, and the academic community nationwide.

Simultaneously, the consultant for the preparation of the structural plan is engaging stakeholders in the western area. Their efforts aim to foster collaboration and gather insights to inform the development of a comprehensive and forward-thinking urban planning framework.

The Resilient Urban Sierra Leone Project (RUSLP) holds promise for numerous benefits. By modernizing the Town and Country Planning Acts and developing a robust structural plan for the western area, the project aims to promote more efficient land use, infrastructure development, and environmental management. Furthermore, it seeks to enhance the overall quality of life for residents and create an environment conducive to sustainable economic growth and social development.

In addition, the project is expected to strengthen institutional capacity and knowledge in integrated urban management, empowering local authorities and communities to address the challenges of urbanization. It will also foster a culture of collaboration and inclusivity, bringing together diverse stakeholders to shape a shared vision for the future of urban spaces in Sierra Leone.

The Ministry of Lands, Housing, and Country Planning, in collaboration with its partners and stakeholders, remains dedicated to ensuring the successful implementation of the RUSLP. Through collective efforts, the project aims to establish the foundation for a more resilient, inclusive, and sustainable urban landscape that will benefit present and future generations.

As the project unfolds, it is anticipated that its positive impact will be widely felt across Sierra Leone, contributing significantly to the country’s overall development and prosperity.
