The High Court has varied the bail conditions of former President Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma (Accused/Applicant) to allow him to travel out of the jurisdiction to seek medical attention.

The decision follows an application made before the Court by his Lawyer, Joseph Fitzgerald Kamara, backed by a medical report exhibited as SB 001 and supported by an Affidavit sworn on the 12th day of January 2024 by Saidu Bangura. In determining the said Application after brief arguments between the Defence team of the former President and the Prosecution, the Court ordered, “that the Order dated the 3rd day of January 2024, more particularly, granting bail to the Accused/Applicant is varied to this extent…”

The varied Order noted that the Accused/Applicant continues to be released on bail after due consideration of his devastating conditions to seek medical treatment, for which he is granted Leave to travel to the Federal Republic of Nigeria. The Court further Ordered that the Accused/Applicant shall be permitted by the Court to be in the Federal Republic of Nigeria for at most three months from the date of this Order and that his sureties should provide regular medical updates, signed and duly authorised. The said medical updates should be done by a Specialist Doctor as to his medical condition and the same should be sent to the Master and Registrar of the High Court while he is out of the Jurisdiction. The Accused/Applicant shall continue to observe the other terms of the Bail Conditions already granted.
