Dr Fatima Maada Bio has been elected President of the Organisation of African First Ladies for Development (OAFLAD), marking a historic moment for Sierra Leone. This historic appointment marks the first time a Sierra Leonean First Lady has held this prestigious position, highlighting the country’s growing influence in continental affairs.

The election took place during the 29th Ordinary General Assembly Open Session, which was held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and brought together First Ladies from across Africa to discuss development, advocacy, and social transformation. Dr. Bio’s leadership will be critical as she addresses critical issues such as women’s empowerment, healthcare, education, gender equality, and the prevention of violence against children and youth. Her election builds on her ongoing commitment to human capital development in Sierra Leone.

Dr. Bio’s rise to prominence stems from her significant contributions to social development initiatives such as the “Hands Off Our Girls” campaign, her advocacy for gender equality, and her tireless efforts to improve women’s and children’s access to education and healthcare throughout Africa. Her presidency at OAFLAD will strengthen her ability to influence policy, mobilise resources, and cultivate partnerships aimed at improving the lives of millions of people across the continent.

This achievement is not only a personal triumph for Dr. Bio but also a source of great national pride for Sierra Leone. It demonstrates the country’s commitment to progressive leadership and active participation in shaping Africa’s development agenda. Congratulations, Dr. Fatima Maada Bio, on this well-deserved honour, and thank you for raising Sierra Leone’s profile on the continental stage!
