UN Secretary-General António Guterres and Dr. Julius Maada Bio

By Mohamed Kelfala Fofanah

UN Secretary-General António Guterres recently praised Dr. Julius Maada Bio, the president of Sierra Leone, for his proactive leadership in promoting reform of the UN Security Council during a bilateral meeting. Secretary-General Guterres acknowledged the historical injustices that have kept Africa on the margins for far too long and expressed his strong support for the continent having more representation on the Council. He praised the recent discussion on the subject, pointing out that every member had responded positively, and he reiterated his resolve to address Africa’s underrepresentation on the Security Council.

“I would like to extend my congratulations for your outstanding performance in yesterday’s debate. Additionally, we would like to thank you for your positive role and voice in the Sahel, Secretary-General Guterres said. In response, President Bio commended the Secretary-General for his steadfast backing and exhorted the world community to fulfil its promises. Additionally, he brought up the worsening security conditions in the Sahel, highlighting the necessity of ongoing attention and action.

“We hold you in high regard as a continent, not only for your backing of us but also for your denunciation of injustice within the structure of the Security Council. Additionally, I will keep pushing for stability and peace in the Sahel, President Bio declared.

The meeting emphasized the continuous efforts to ensure equitable representation for all regions, especially Africa, and to reform the Security Council. The two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to promoting development, security, and peace in the Sahel and elsewhere. The cooperative strategy between Secretary-General Guterres and President Bio denotes a shared dedication to tackling global issues and advancing a more just and inclusive international order.
