Sierra Leone’s Ministry of Sports and the National Sports Authority (NSA) recently held a joint retreat at the Galiness Resort Hotel in Bo City. The retreat centred on forming a strong team to accelerate the country’s athletic development.
During the retreat, the Ministry of Sports and the NSA had their roles, duties, and responsibilities assessed. The primary goal was to strengthen their monitoring and supervisory roles in executing MOS deliverables and advancing the government’s sports agenda as outlined in the National Mid-term Development Plan (NMTDP) 2024-2030.
One of the retreat’s main outcomes was the creation and design of a comprehensive sports structure and system in Sierra Leone. This framework will guide the overall operations and functions of the sports sector.
The administrative and technical aspects of the sports sector were thoroughly evaluated to determine the path for each department, unit, or section within the MOS and the NSA. This includes establishing the chain of command, communication channels, administrative protocols, reporting lines, and performance evaluations for the sports industry. The goal is to ensure that sports personnel understand and take the necessary actions as experts to develop sports in Sierra Leone.
The retreat also discussed the implementation of sports policy documents, the roles of sports governing bodies, sports auxiliary bodies, sports associations/federations, sports development organizations and partners, sports personnel, athletes, and performance.
Overall, the retreat aimed to implement sector reforms to increase output, to match or surpass other world-class sporting nations and to align with the government’s agenda to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030.
The joint retreat between the Ministry of Sports and the NSA is a significant step towards Sierra Leone’s sports development excellence. The commitment to building a strong team and implementing necessary reforms will undoubtedly benefit the country’s sports sector.
