SLPP Government Increases Minimum Wage

The Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) Government under the stewardship of His Excellency, Dr. Julius Maada Bio through the Ministry of Finance has made some considerate changes to support human capital development by increasing the Salaries of both government workers and that of the private sector.

Following the improvement in the conditions of service of health workers, effective April 2020, all Government teachers will experience an increment of 30% in their salaries. Also, the Government has increased the minimum wage from Le500, 000 to Le600, 000 per month; the Minister of Finance in the Chamber of Parliament made the announcement while presenting the Government Budget and Statement of Economic and Financial Policies last Friday. The Government wage bill is projected to increase to Le3.17 trillion in 2020 from Le 2.59 trillion in 2019. The increase of Le586.6 billion will cover the wage bill of the Universities and Colleges, bringing into the payroll 5000 teachers, 3000 health sector workers and 1000 police office in 2020. The Government introduced the payment of salaries to Mayors/Chairpersons and their Deputies effective April 2020. In the same vein, sitting fees and transport allowances for Councillors increased, and also increased the salaries of the core staff of councils. Remuneration to Paramount Chiefs and 12 other chiefdom functionaries correspondingly increased.
