The tenth group of medical volunteers from Spain’s Surgeon In Action Foundation arrived in Sierra Leone this week to conduct a week-long free general surgical program at the Sierra Leone Police (SLP) Hospital. The visiting team was formally welcomed by the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr William Fayia Sellu, who thanked the medics for their continued support of the hospital.
During a welcome ceremony, IGP Sellu expressed his gratitude for the foundation’s ongoing assistance, noting that their regular missions have played an important role in improving the quality of care at the SLP Hospital.
He cited growing regional confidence in the facility, stating that patients travelling from neighbouring Liberia and Guinea demonstrate recognition of the hospital’s capabilities.

The certificate, issued on behalf of the Medical and Dental Association, authorises the visiting medics to practice in Sierra Leone during their mission.
Dr John Mumuneh Konteh, Deputy Director of Medical Services and Medical Superintendent at the SLP Hospital, discussed the partnership’s broader impact. In addition to providing free surgeries and medical equipment, the foundation now supports human capital development.
Dr. Konteh announced that the team has awarded a scholarship to David Fanday, a member of the SLP Hospital staff, to pursue medical studies abroad. He also stated that the collaboration has already benefited over 1,500 patients with free surgical procedures.
Leading the visiting delegation, Dr Daniel Pastor informed hosts that, unlike previous missions, each member of the tenth batch is making their first trip to Sierra Leone. He reaffirmed the team’s commitment to providing high-quality care throughout their stay.
Over the next week, the Spanish team expects to perform more than 200 free general surgeries, extending a partnership that officials say is improving the SLP Hospital’s service delivery and regional reputation.
