On August 16, 2024, the Sierra Leone Broadcasters’ Association (SiLBA) made a significant step toward improving media collaboration by meeting with the Chinese Embassy in Freetown. The meeting featured a presentation by SiLBA’s executive members, who emphasized the organization’s commitment to creating a vibrant and sustainable media ecosystem in Sierra Leone.
The Sierra Leone Corporate Affairs Commission has incorporated SiLBA, a non-profit organization established two years ago. Its primary mission is to act as a national umbrella organization for broadcasters. Chairman Stanley Bangura Jnr stated that the association is committed to protecting broadcasters’ rights, collective interests, and welfare while also working to improve their professional well-being and output. With 100 members and 40 radio and television stations, SiLBA works to create an inclusive, competitive, and thriving media landscape that prioritizes professionalism while meeting the needs of broadcasters across the country.
The SiLBA headquarters, located at 48 Jenner Wright Road in Upgun, Freetown, serves as a hub for promoting broadcaster unity, professionalism, collaboration, and best practices. To further its goals, the association advocates for broadcasting’s long-term viability and profitability encourages technological innovation, facilitates training opportunities, and networks with global entities.
In response to questions about its relationships with other media organizations and stakeholders, SiLBA stated that it prefers collaboration over competition. The association’s goal is to supplement the efforts of established organizations such as the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ), the Sierra Leone Reporters Union (SLRU), and the Independent Media Commission (IMC), as well as media development partners like the Media Reform Coordinating Group (MRCG) and the Independent Radio Network (IRN).
During the meeting, Zhang Dianbin, Minister Counsellor at the Chinese Embassy, emphasized the role of the media, particularly broadcast media, in disseminating credible information to the public. He encouraged SiLBA to represent China’s values and achievements on a global scale, and he stated that the embassy is willing to support the organization’s efforts. Zhang requested that SiLBA submit a proposal outlining priority areas for potential collaboration.
SiLBA thanked the embassy for its willingness to collaborate and reiterated its commitment to fostering mutual understanding and cooperation. The association outlined its immediate priorities for the coming year, which include securing office space, creating a website, forming international partnerships, organizing exchange visits, mobilizing memberships, conducting training programs, obtaining grants for radio equipment, and carrying out various media-related projects.
The dialogue between SiLBA and the Chinese Embassy represents a positive step toward strengthening ties and advancing Sierra Leone’s media landscape through collaborative initiatives. Both parties look forward to future collaborations that will raise professional standards, assist media professionals, and ensure the public’s access to accurate and informative content. As SiLBA grows in influence in the media industry, this collaboration reflects a shared commitment to promoting media excellence and contributing to a dynamic and responsible media environment in Sierra Leone.
