Sierra Leone lawmakers, led by Hon. Boston Munda, have expressed strong support for the National Sports Authority’s recent activities and praised the agency’s work under Executive Director Dr Emmanuel Saffa Abdulai. Hon. Munda, Chairman of the Sub-Committee on Budget Appropriation, stated during the FY 2024/2025 budget appropriation hearing on Friday, December 12, 2025, in Committee Room One, that the committee was “impressed and pleased” with the Authority’s performance.
During the hearing, lawmakers acknowledged the NSA’s expanded support for sports other than football, noting that this increased focus has come at a high cost. Despite concerns about spending levels, Hon. Munda and other lawmakers praised the Authority’s strategic investments and visible impact in the sporting sector.
In response to committee questions, Dr Emmanuel Saffa Abdulai thanked President Bio’s government for providing unprecedented financial support for sports development. Dr Abdulai urged Members of Parliament to support more funding to meet the demands of a growing sports landscape. He emphasised that increased investment in sports provides both social and athletic benefits, particularly by engaging young people, reducing crime, and lowering substance abuse rates in communities across the country.
The National Sports Authority, established by law in 2017, is responsible for promoting, encouraging, supervising, and regulating all sports and sports-related activities in and outside of Sierra Leone. The hearing highlighted lawmakers’ and NSA leadership’s shared willingness to collaborate on sustaining and expanding sports programs for national development.
